Turbo Roundabout Construction Update

September 2024

We’re excited to provide an update on the progress of Canada’s second turbo roundabout, which will soon be opening at the Three Sisters intersection. Scheduled for full completion later this fall (weather permitting), this advanced roundabout features unique design elements that enhance traffic flow and safety. Please note, that the Cascade Drive exit will remain closed due to ongoing construction within The Gateway at Three Sisters.

A turbo roundabout is a specialized form of a multi-lane roundabout designed to improve traffic capacity while minimizing conflict points between vehicles. Unlike traditional roundabouts, a turbo roundabout uses a spiral road geometry and concrete lane dividers to direct traffic more efficiently. This design encourages drivers to select the correct lane before entering the roundabout, thereby reducing decision-making and promoting safer, smoother circulation.

In the sketch above, you’ll notice that the central island of the turbo roundabout is spiral-shaped, which along with the surrounding lane dividers, guides vehicles into their appropriate lanes.

Proper signage will be positioned at each entrance to help drivers navigate the roundabout effectively. For instance, signage for those approaching from the TransCanada will direct drivers to choose the right lane for an exit onto Three Sisters Parkway, while the left lane will allow access to other exits.
